A Change of Plans 🚏🚌
When I initially set out to explore the beauty of the Netherlands, my first destination outside of the city center was supposed to be Keukenhof, famously known as the “Garden of Europe.”
Keukenhof is one of the world’s largest flower gardens, renowned for its vibrant and expansive fields of tulips. Unfortunately, since we were visiting in June, we had missed prime tulip season which typically runs from mid-March to mid-May. 🌷🥲
Determined to make the most of our trip, Andy and I decided to visit a tour guide agency (Tours & Tickets) in the heart of Amsterdam to see what other options were available.
Discovering Zaanse Schans: A Charming Day Trip from Amsterdam
The helpful staff suggested we take a day trip to Zaanse Schans, a picturesque village known for its historic windmills, charming wooden houses, and rich Dutch heritage. The cost was about 45 Euros per person and included Zaanse Schans plus more.
With our new destination in mind, we eagerly set out for a new adventure. ➡️
The Sweet Smell of Chocolate 🍫
We boarded the bus at Amsterdam Central Station through the IJ Passage and were soon on our way to Zaanse Schans.
During the ride, we were pleasantly surprised by a delightful chocolate aroma that filled the air. 🍫
This sweet smell comes from the nearby cocoa factories in the Zaan region, a testament to the area’s long history of cocoa processing. This unexpected treat added an extra layer of enjoyment to our journey. 😌
Arriving at Zaanse Schans 🌾🐄
Upon arriving at Zaanse Schans, we were greeted by a landscape that seemed to have stepped straight out of a storybook.
The village is a living museum that preserves the traditional Dutch way of life. Its iconic windmills, quaint wooden houses, and lush green fields create a serene and picturesque environment.

One of the main attractions at Zaanse Schans is its collection of well-preserved windmills.
These windmills, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, played a crucial role in the industrial development of the Zaan region. They were used for various purposes, such as sawing wood, grinding spices, and producing oil. 🪚🌶️🛢️
The Incredible History of the Zaanse Schans Windmill
The windmills at Zaanse Schans were integral to the region’s industrial growth, harnessing wind power to process raw materials and manufacture goods.
Today, these windmills have been meticulously maintained and restored, allowing visitors to explore their construction, operation, and historical significance.
Now located in Zaandam, these windmills date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and were integral to the Zaan region’s development, which became one of the world’s first industrial areas.
Significance and Purpose:
Each windmill at Zaanse Schans had a specific industrial function, harnessing wind power to process various materials. For example, De Zoeker and De Bonte Hen were oil mills that played a crucial role in producing vegetable oils. 🛢️
De Kat is a unique paint mill that still grinds pigments for traditional paints. De Huisman, originally a mustard mill, now produces spices. 🌶️🎨

One of the highlights of our visit was climbing to the top deck of a windmill.
The narrow stairs and steep ladders made the climb an adventure, but the effort was rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
From the top, we could see lush farmlands, winding canals, and a beautiful horizon, with the rotating sails of the windmills adding to the mesmerizing scenery.
Exploring the Farmland and Animals 🐄
Zaanse Schans is not just about windmills; it also features charming farmlands and a variety of animals. We wandered through the fields, encountering cows grazing, sheep roaming, and ducks swimming in the canals. The traditional barns and farmhouses added to the rustic charm of the village.

Funny enough, I’ve been to Keukenhof during tulip season, but not Zaanse! Thing was, it was pouring rain when I visited Keukenhof, so my visit wasn’t the most enjoyable…I would’ve loved to have seen the iconic windmills in Zaanse, but that’ll have to be another visit for another time!
